Currently, court appearances in California will require you to use a certified Mandarin interpreter.  However, we suggest that you do not use a certified Mandarin interpreter when you don't have to.  The reasons are as follows:

• The oral interpretation exam for certifying Mandarin interpreters is flawed, as many experienced interpreters could not pass it despite several trials.  Because of large number of complaints received, CPS Human Resource Services, the administrator for all the exams, has lost its contract by the decision of the Judicial Council of California.  Bribery was suspected in grading the examinees.
   
• In comparison, the American Translators Association uses a much fairer examination process.  (However, they only certify translators (written), not interpreters (oral).)
   
• There are only a few certified Mandarin interpreters in California and some of their interpretation skills and professional ethics are disputed.  For example, Penny Kole is a certified Mandarin interpreter.  However, her ethics is disputed, according to Southern California Chinese Court Interpreters Association  (see http://www.scccia.com/issues/unite.htm)
   
• They charge exceedingly high prices causing burden to you and your clients.

However, despite all the reasons above, should you need a certified Mandarin interpreter, we will provide you one with good interpretation skills as well as good professional ethics.
